Detailed Itinerary for 3 Days Akagera Wildlife and Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trekking Safari
Day 1: Pickup from Kigali and Transfer to Akagera for a Game Drive Safari
After breakfast, you will proceed on a wildlife drive around the park, seeing the finest of eastern Rwanda has to offer. Akagera National Park is located on the Tanzanian border in the eastern part of Rwanda. African Parks is now administering this park and has done an excellent job with conservation.
Previously, there was a lot of friction between residents and the park, but this was resolved by fencing off a portion of the park and introducing community tours, which encourage visitors to visit the villages and profit correspondingly.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only Savannah park and is home to a variety of mammal species such as lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, kobs, zebras, bushbucks, waterbucks, and, most recently, black rhinos from South Africa, making Akagera National Park officially a big five park, as it was many years ago. It also supports a diverse range of bird species in various environments such as woods, wetlands, lakes, and savannahs.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park- Visit Nyanza King’s Palace and National Museum of Butare
Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in southwest Rwanda, near the Burundi border. It is a wide tract of highland rainforest inhabited by several chimpanzee species, as well as owl-faced and colobus monkeys. The Canopy Walkway, part of the Igishigishigi Trail, is a high-suspension bridge that offers views of the valley and surrounding woodlands. A route leads to the Kamiranzovu Marsh, which contains birds, orchids, and a waterfall.
After an early breakfast, we’ll head to Nyungwe Forest. On the journey, stop by Nyanza King’s Palace, the National Museum of Butare, and Nyanza, which served as the center of the ancient Rwanda Kingdom before Europeans arrived. The estate includes King Mutara’s contemporary palace, which he built in 1934. It’s nicely adorned with native carpets and kitchenware.
Dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking and Transfer Back to Kigali
Following breakfast, you will explore the Nyungwe forest as you search for the chimpanzees and also look out for the famous Nyungwe black and white colobus monkeys. A guided hike in the Nyungwe forest with our professional guides, who are well-versed in botany, ornithology, and interspecies connections, will provide you with an entirely new learning experience.
