Detailed Itinerary for 4 Days Nyungwe Primates & Hiking Safari
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park and Hike Ishigishi Trail.
In the morning, you will be picked by the driver from your hotel in Kigali and drive southwards to Nyungwe forest National Park. You will have a stopover at the King’s Palace in Butare and then have lunch enroute to the park. Upon your arrival at the park, you will embark on a hiking expedition along the Ishigishi trail. This is one of the easiest hiking trails in Nyungwe national park and takes approximately 1½ hours to complete the 2.1 kilometer trail.
Later drive back for dinner and overnight Camp at Uwinka, Gisakura Guesthouse (Budget), Nyungwe Top Hill View (Mid-range), Nyungwe One & Only (Luxury).
Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking and Canopy Walk
Enjoy breakfast and go for briefing about the endangered chimpanzees before entering the forest in search of the active and playful fellows in Nyungwe forest. The Chimpanzees are much easier to spot as they jump from one tree to another, chattering and laughing. Chimpanzee tracking usually takes about 3 hours. On finding them, spend an hour while taking pictures and videos.
After lunch, you will go on an afternoon hike that will take you to the Canopy Walk-a swing bridge 50 meters in length that is suspended from large trees. You will be able to see the amazing rainforest with a bird’s eye view, spotting wildlife moving about below you there after connect to your accommodation to spend the evening at leisure.
Later head back to your lodge/camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Hike Rukuzi Trail
Have your breakfast early in the morning. You will then embark on a guided hike along Rukuzi trail. This trail covers 9 kilometers and takes approximately 5 hours to complete a full circuit. It is one of the best hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest national park and is usually used by visitors doing chimpanzee trekking in the park which means that you stand high chances of encountering chimpanzees and other primates like colobus monkeys during your hike. Hiking this trail will also bless you will spectacular views of Lake Kivu which is shared by Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Upon completion of your hike, drive back to your lodge/camp for lunch and relax for the rest of the afternoon.
Day 4: Colobus Monkey Tracking & Transfer Back to Kigali.
Start your day with breakfast at your lodge, check out and meet up with your guide. You will then drive to Uwinka visitor center where you will begin your tracking from. After a short briefing from your guide, you begin your hike to track the beautiful Black & White colobus monkeys in Nyungwe forest.
Tracking can take between 2 to 4 hours depending on how fast you can locate the monkeys. You will be given an entire hour to spend with the colobus monkeys once you have spotted a group. After your primate tracking activity, you can choose to either have your packed lunch or simply head back to the resturants at Uwinka for lunch.
You will then embark on a 5 hours’ drive back to Kigali City where your guide will drop you off at any hotel of your choice or at the airport in case you have to board an evening flight back home. End of Tour.
