Detailed Itinerary for 5 Days Nyungwe & Kahuzi Biega Safari.
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Arrive in Kigali in the morning and you will be picked by the driver from your hotel in Kigali and enjoy a short tour of Kigali City where you will visit interesting places in the city like Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, Umusambi Crane Village and Caplaki Craft Village among others. You will then drive southwards to Nyungwe forest National Park. You will have a stopover in Butare, where you will visit the national museum of Rwanda, the king’s palace in Nyanza, and the Rwanda genocide memorial site. After lunch, connect to your accommodation to spend the evening at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Top Hill View Hotel
Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe and Canopy Walk
Wake up as early as 5:30am and set off for your chimpanzee trek. Have a brief before entering the forest in search of the active and playful fellows in Nyungwe forest. The Chimpanzees are much easier to spot as they jump from one tree to another, chattering and laughing. Chimpanzee tracking usually takes about 3 hours. On finding them, spend an hour while taking pictures and videos. Have lunch after your chimp trekking excursion. After lunch, you will go on a walking trail that will take you to the Canopy Walk-a swing bridge 50 meters in length that is suspended from large trees. You will be able to see the amazing rainforest with a bird’s eye view, spotting wildlife moving about below you there after connect to your accommodation to spend the evening at leisure. Later drive back to your lodge for dinner and overnight at your hotel.
Day 3: Transfer to Bukavu- DR Congo
Have a leisurely breakfast, pack your belongings and check out of your hotel. You will then connect with your driver/guide and drive to the Rusizi II border to cross into DR Congo. You will check-in with the immigrations office at the border arrive at your accommodation in time for lunch and relax at your hotel for the rest of the afternoon. You can opt to go for a community visit if you are interested. Return to your hotel in for dinner. Overnight at Orchid Hotel.
Day 4: Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi Biega National Park
Have an early breakfast as you will need all the energy today when trekking the highly sought after Eastern Lowland Gorillas. Drive to Kahuzi Biega National Park headquarters in anticipation of seeing these majestic primates. The eastern lowland gorillas have a distinct difference from mountain gorillas and you will get to notice this during your hike. You will be briefed upon your arrival in the park and then start your hike to locate one of the habituated gorilla families in the park. It is about a 2 hours’ hike to the gorilla family depending on their location. You will be given an hour to spend with the gorillas, so ensure that your camera is ready! Return to your hotel for lunch and spend the evening relaxing at your hotel. Dinner and overnight at your hotel as previous night.
Day 5: Transfer Back to Kigali.
Wake up to enjoy the last views and breeze of the DR Congo, connect for a relaxed breakfast meal at your hotel and embark on your drive back to Kigali. Exit Kahuzi Biega national park crossing the Congo-Rwanda border at Rusizi II and drive through Nyungwe forest with lunch enroute to Kigali city. You will arrive in Kigali in the evening hours and be dropped off at the airport or hotel as you will advise. End of Safari.
