Day 1: Pickup and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Pickup & Transfer to Volcanoes: After breakfast you will depart for a 2 hours’ drive to Ruhengeri area the second largest town in Rwanda, with its stunning backdrop of five volcanic mountains – The Virungas- Arriving at the Red rocks intercultural exchange center for a lunch that you will help prepare (optional). Our cooking lessons involve mainly Rwandese dishes in an African cuisine and in an African Kitchen.
Later in the afternoon indulge in banana beer production to understand the chemistry about the process of brewing a local beer from bananas fruits. If you find the activity interesting enough you can join the women in squeezing the juice out of the bananas and drink a glass of juice (Optional). Dinner and overnight at Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge/ Bisate Lodge/ Five Volcanoes
Day 2: Golden Monkey Tracking/ Gorilla Trekking
Golden Monkey Tracking: You will have breakfast and report back to the park headquarters where you will get a ranger guide and start your golden monkey trek in volcanoes national park. This is a rather short experience that can last an hour or three hours. After spending time with the golden monkeys, you will go and have lunch then after connect to enjoy Ibyi’wachu cultural tour.
Gorilla Trekking: If you are not interested in tracking golden monkeys, you can opt for gorilla trekking. This experience of gorilla tracking is a once in a life time adventure. The rangers will lead you deep into the forest in search for the Gorillas. You will move up and down the rugged terrain until you finally meet these harmonious creatures that will entertain you with performances for about 1 hour. The activity in Rwanda can take 3-8 hours since the gorillas move up and down. Dinner and overnight at same lodge as above.
Day 3: Transfer to Goma via Le Grand Barrier
You will meet your guide after breakfast and embark on your drive to cross into Congo to Goma. Check in with the tourism office strategically located at the Grand Barrier border Post to receive Gorilla and Volcano permit that’s to be presented at the beginning of every trek. There after you will be transfer to Kibumba tented camp just near the trailhead of Nyiragongo volcano
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park
Have your first meal of the day – Breakfast and report to Bukima patrol passport with your passport and permit details for registration and briefing. All treks in Virunga national park begin here. Later head into the forest with your ranger guide and expect to hike for 1 to 3 hours until you find the mountain Gorillas in Virunga national park
When you get to see them, you will be in awe inspired by their huge size and gentle nature as you watch them go about their daily business with mothers tending to the young ones and the juveniles making an effort to impress. You will stay up to 1 hour maximum and head back to the camp enjoy a late lunch and have the rest of the day at leisure, including time for nature walks and bird watching. Return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Transfer Back to Kigali (Optional City Tour)
Drive to the border and re-enter Rwanda then proceed to Kigali. Depending on your time of arrival in Kigali city, you can opt to take a short tour of Kigali city and later have your guide/driver drop you off at a hotel of your choice of at the airport. End of Tour
