Chimpanzee Trekking Rules & Regulations
Chimpanzee Trekking Rules & Regulations are the laws that are put in place to ensure that the trekking experience is a success and that you don’t get harmed or you don’t harm the project.
Chimpanzees are inhabited in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chimpanzees share 98% of the human DNA and they are the closest to human beings. They communicate through deafening screams, hitting the tree barks and buttress hooting, playing, and grooming each other and many more.
In Congo, Chimpanzees are protected in Virunga National park and one of the chimpanzee trekking rules and regulations is that a maximum of 4 people is allowed to trek the mountain Gorillas after a short briefing about Chimpanzee trekking.
In Rwanda Chimpanzee trekking is done in Nyungwe National park and they are the famous attraction in Nyungwe National park. You’re given one hour to spend with the chimpanzees as they continue with their day to day activities in the park. Chimpanzee trekking can as well be done in Cyamudongo, and it takes 4 hours drive from Kigali. It’s Africa’s oldest Montane forest, and it’s home to over 14 species of primates. These include over 500 chimpanzees and other primates to spot including Black Vervet monkey and L’Hoests among others.
Chimpanzee trekking permits cost 100$ and there are over 64 permits that are sold each day to trekkers and 8 people are allowed each day to trek the Mountain Gorillas. You are encouraged to book a Gorilla permit in advance.
In Uganda, Chimpanzees can be trekked in Kibale National park. Kibale National park inhabits over 1500 chimpanzees. Kibale Chimpanzee permit costs 150USD.
In Uganda, Chimpanzees can be trekked in other places like Kalinzu Forest which is located near Queen Elizabeth National park. The minimum age for chimpanzee trekking in Kalinzu is 13 years and the permit costs 30USD.
Chimpanzee trekking can as well be done in Budongo forest which is located in Murchison falls national park. Budongo forest is one of the places where one can encounter, the chimpanzee primates. The permits cost 80USD and 40 USD for trekking in Murchison Falls National Park.
Kyambura Gorge is located in Queen Elizabeth National park and it’s the 4th park where chimpanzees can be trekked in Uganda. You can view the beautiful scenery of Gorge where you can enjoy the streams, Forests and rivers. Some clients prefer trekking in Both Kibale and Kyambura Gorge because both areas’ chimpanzee trekking permits cost 50USD per person and 40USD for entry permits.
For trekkers going for all day Habituation experience in the reserves or National park, the chimpanzee trekking rules and regulations are in place in order to protect the Chimpanzees in their habitat. The habituation is a process where chimpanzees come into encounter with humans as they continue with their day to day activities for a prolonged period of time.
The chimpanzee trekking rules & regulations state that the minimum age for chimpanzee trekking is 16years of age. It’s the rule for all the parks that are administered under the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Other chimpanzee trekking rules & regulations include the following:
- Keep a distance of 8 meters between chimpanzees and yourself and do not provoke the chimpanzees.
- Do not eat while trekking or in front of the Chimpanzees.
- Do not throw Rubbish in the Forest habitat of chimpanzees.
- Keep a distance of 8 meters away from the Chimpanzees and do not provoke the primates.
- Do not smoke in the presence of the primates or drink.
- Do not use flash cameras while in front of the chimpanzees or during the trek.
- Uganda is one of the best countries in East Africa that inhabits over 5,000 chimpanzees.
