Location Of Nyungwe Forest National Park : The Rwanda map /East African safari destination shows it in the Southwest of the Country ‘’Rwanda’’. The park sits in the Albertine Rift, in the South East of the Lake Kivu.

Nyungwe National Park can also be tracked by its neighbor districts in Rwanda. It is surrounded by five districts include;

Rusizi district – South west of Nyungwe: This is famous districts among others, located on the Lake shores of Lake Kivu, which offers a perfect view of the mountainous district which shares a border with Democratic Republic of Congo. The district is known to be having the stunning water spring. More to that, the lowest altitude place in Rwanda belongs to these area – Bugarara place. The Bugarara place is a plain area in the West of Rwanda which is about 900meter above the sea level.

Well, Rusizi city is also known for its common food ‘’Isambaza’’ and you don’t want to miss this when you are there. It covers 53kilometer drive from Rusizi border and 34 kilometers drive from Kamembe town of Rusizi to Gisakura reception center. It also covers a 49 kilometer drive from Kamembe to Uwinka reception center.

Nyuruguru district –Southeast of Nyungwe: This district is one of the best pilgrimage sites in Rwanda and it’s once named the holy land. However, there is an annually trip of Catholic churches to this area from different parts of the continent, countries and regions. At the starting point ‘’Nyaruguru’ ’it covers an 87 kilometers drive to access Kitabi receptions center and 122 kilometers drive from Nyaruguru district to the famous Nyungwe reception centers which is Uwinka in the center of the park.

Nyamagabe district –East of Nyungwe

The Nyamagabe district is known as the second after Huye ‘’Butare’’ district when you drive heading to Nyungwe National Park. It is characterized by high mountains and there are high chances of viewing many tea plantations especially when you access Kitabi sector.  Expect to see baboons in plenty around the road in this area. More so, it takes 21 kilometers from Nyamagabe town to nearest Nyungwe’s reception center which is Kitabi reception center on the entry of the park when you are driving from Kigali, though it takes 56 km drive from Nyamagabe town to Uwinka reception center.

Karongi district –North west of the Nyungwe

This is one of the perfect resort districts of Rwanda which is a high mountain district.  Along here, offers the excellent view of Kivu Lake and its Islands. You can’t get tired of seeing this view, and honeymooners are advised to go there.

This district is famous for coffee –meaning you can opt to do coffee tours when you visit the place. The first stylish tea plantation which is Gisovu tea estate also found in this place. It covers 91 kilometers drive from Karongi district to Gisakura reception center, and also 109 kilometer driving from Karongi district to Uwinka reception center.

Nyumasheke district –West of Nyungwe

The Nyumasheke district is characterized by cold climate and it is a resort district, offering a rewarding view of the Lake Kivu and the green tea plantation estate. It takes only a 41 kilometer drive from Nyumasheke district to Gisakura reception center which is the closest to Nyamasheke, but also cover a59 km drive from Nyamasheke district to Uwinka reception center. It also takes a 219 kilometer drive from Kigali ,216 km drive from Rubavu district.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is a high tropical mountainous forest with altitude and one of the Congo Nile divide mountains chain. More fact, the park stands at an elevation of about 1600 -2950 meter above the sea level. The highest point meets at Mount Bigugu with an altitude climate with heavy rain of about 2000 mm of annually and there is always moderate temperature.

Lastly, what makes Nyungwe Forest National Park unique to other parks in East Africa alongside others in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania – beautiful scenery, the canopy walk, chimpanzee tracking , being home with the highest concentration of primates especially the chimpanzees and also being one of the oldest rainforest in Africa.
