Mkomazi National Park is located in northeastern Tanzania, especially in the Kilenimanjaro in Lushoto district and Tanga regions in Mkinga District Kinga. The national park lies approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Moshi, the gateway town for Mount Kilimanjaro treks. The Mkomazi National Park is located close to the Tanzania- Kenya border, adjacent to Tsavo National Park. this location is significant for cross-border wildlife conservation efforts and facilitates animals’ migration between two vital ecosystems. Mkomazi was designated as a game reserve in 1951, serving primarily as a hunting ground before enhanced conservation priorities shifted, in 2006 Mkomazi was officially designated as a national park. This change was part of a larger initiative to enhance conservation efforts and protect wildlife and habitat within its boundaries. The park covers over 3,234 square kilometers and is dominated by acacia comephorid vegetation. The area commonly called ‘Mkomazi’ is actually the union of two previous game reserves, the Umba Game Reserve in the and the Mkomazi Game Reserve in the west.

Animals

Mkomazi holds a larger of animals and is home to a rich variety of wildlife making it a unique destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Mkomazi is home to five endemic bird species including the Somali, yellow-vented Eremomela, long-billed crombec, violet wood-hoopoe and Friedmann’s lark. You won’t find these species anywhere in the world except Mkomazi National Park. It is also a home to dry country bird species like Cobalt-crested vulture and guinea fowl. Actually, Mkomazi is home to over 450 avian species. They can be seen in different habitats like riverine coasts, forests, trees and grasslands. Other species include ground birds like ostriches, ground hornbill, Kori bustard and secretary bird. Migratory birds like the Eurasian roller tend to settle at Mkomazi National Park between November and April which is the best time for birding.

Vegetation

Mkomazi National Park boast a diverse array of vegetation type that reflects its unique ecological characteristic. The park’s landscape is shaped by its geographical location and climatic conditions, which influences the type of plants that thrive there. The park is dominated by acacia woodlands which occupy the large part of the park, comprising a mix of low-lying taller woodlands. Also, the park is comprised of the savannah grasslands which are prevalent throughout Mkomazi, characterised by a mix of grassland and scattered trees. These grasslands are ideal habitat for grazing animals and are crucial for park’s herbivore population such as elephants, zebras and various antelopes.

In addition, the riverine forest and riparian vegetation are vital for the biodiversity of the park as they provide essential moisture and habitat. This forest typically includes species such as Ficus, syzygium and various palms and are rich in birdlife and other wildlife. The baobab trees are also found in Mkomazi, adding a distinctive feature to the landscape as well as shrublands and scrubs.
