Detailed Itinerary for 4 Days Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trek and Hiking Safari!

 Day 1: Pickup from Kigali & Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

In the morning, you will be picked by the driver from your hotel in Kigali and embark on a 6 hours’ drive to Nyungwe national park. You will have a stopover visit to the King’s Palace in Nyanza and national museum in Butare and then have lunch enroute to the park. Arrive in Nyungwe national park in the evening and connect to your accommodation to spend the evening at leisure. Dinner and overnight at your designated lodge or hotel.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe/Cyamudongo Forest

Enjoy breakfast and go for briefing before entering the forest, searching for the active and playful fellows in Nyungwe forest. The Chimpanzees are easy to spot, as they jump from one tree to another, chattering and laughing. Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe forest national park usually takes about 3 hours. You will then have your packed lunch and later return back to base where you will meet up with your driver guide. After having your packed lunch, and head back to base where you will find your driver guide waiting to take you back to your lodge.

Later have dinner and overnight stay at your lodge/hotel.

Day 3: Morning Hike on Rukuzi Trail and canopy walk

Rukuzi Trail

Enjoy breakfast and go for briefing at the park headquarters. You will be briefed by the park’s head ranger before embarking on a guided hike along Rukuzi Trail which is one of the 19 trails in Nyungwe Forest national Park. Hike on this trail take approximately 5 hours and is usually rated as a difficult hike and yet so rewarding. This trail takes you through a forested buffer zone and into an open area, with views of the park as well as Lake Kivu in the far distance. Also, on a clear day, you will have views of some volcanoes. Remember to carry your packed lunch from the lodge before you leave.

After lunch, you will go on a walking trail that will take you to the Canopy Walk-a swing bridge 50 meters in length that is suspended from large trees. You will be able to see the amazing rainforest with a bird’s eye view, spotting wildlife moving about below you. This hike takes between 1-2 hours depending on your pace. Before night fall, you will return to the lodge for dinner as above

Day 4: Waterfalls Hike & Transfer to Kigali (Approximately 6 hours’ drive)

Have breakfast early in the morning then drive to the park for a guided nature walk to one of the Isumo waterfalls in the park. This is a 4 hours hike to and from and you will get to see a lot of wildlife and bird species during your hike.

After your hike, have lunch and later transfer to Kigali where your driver/guide will drop you off at a hotel of your choice or Kigali International Airport where you will you will board your flight back home. If a city tour was not possible on your first day, then you can opt for a short tour of Kigali city.
