Detailed Itinerary for 5 Days Nyungwe and Volcanoes Park Safari
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park. (Approximately 6 hours’ drive)
In the morning, you will be picked by the driver from your hotel in Kigali and drive southwards to Nyungwe Forest National Park. You will have a stopover in Butare, where you will visit the national museum of Rwanda, the king’s palace in Nyanza with lunch en route. Dinner and overnight at your accommodation.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trek, Canopy Walk
Enjoy breakfast and go for a briefing before entering the forest, searching for the active and playful fellows in Nyungwe forest. The Chimpanzees are easy to spot, as they jump from one tree to another, chattering and laughing. Chimp tracking usually takes about 3 hours. You will then have your packed lunch and later return back to base where you will meet up with your driver guide.
After having your packed lunch, you will embark on a guided nature walk along the famous canopy walkway bridge- a swing bridge 50 meters in length that is suspended from large trees. You will be able to see the amazing rainforest with a bird’s eye view, spotting wildlife moving about below you there after connect to your accommodation to spend the evening at leisure. This hike takes only 2 hours.
Later drive back to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Morning Hike and Rope Challenge, Zip Lining and Transfer to Gisenyi
Have your breakfast in time and drive to the park. Today you will embark on a morning hike in Nyungwe forest national park where you will be exploring one of the 19 trails in the park. Enjoy viewing a variety of wildlife in the forest such as primates, bush babies and also bird species. Some trails like the Rusizi trail or Isumo trail will reward you with stunning views of waterfalls. This half day hike can take you between 4-6 hours depending on the trail that you will be exploring today.
Head back to base and have lunch. Later you will participate in the newly introduced rope challenge course and zip lining in Nyungwe forest. Enjoy panoramic views of Nyungwe forest and you may also spot some primates in the trees on a lucky day.
Later retire to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay at Lake Kivu, Gisenyi.
Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park and Gorilla Trek and Afternoon Ibyi’wacu Village Tour (Approximately 1-hour drive)
Breakfast will be served early. You will embark on an hours’ drive to Volcanoes National Park from Gisenyi, arriving at the park in time for your briefing starting at 7 am. Your park guide will give you highlights of specific details about the way of life of the gorillas you will be tracking. The hike can take anything from one to seven hours.
Trekking through the steep, bamboo slopes and then finally coming across the gorillas camouflaged in the vegetation is an inspiring and privileged moment. Once you reach the gorillas, you are allowed to spend one hour with them as you stand 6 meters away. Upon completion of this magical encounter, you will connect again with your driver/guide and drive to your lodge for lunch and refresh yourself.
After lunch, you will embark on an afternoon cultural tour of Ibyi’wacu Village, also known as ‘the gorilla guardians’ village.’ Enjoy dance and singing performances from the local intore dance troupe and visit the former king’s palace. Later drive to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Golden Monkey Trek and Transfer Back to Kigali.
Have a relaxed breakfast meal at your hotel. You will then meet up with your driver guide and head out to the park for briefing.
Later meet up with your driver guide and drive back to Kigali for a tour of Kigali City where you will visit interesting sites like Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, Kimironko market and Caplaki craft Village. You will have lunch in Kigali city. Drop-off at Kigali International Airport in time to check-inn for your evening flight.
