Detailed Itinerary for 5 Days Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trek and Hiking Cyinzobe Trail
Day 1: Pickup from Kigali and Transfer Back to Nyungwe NP
At 5:00 a.m., you will be picked up from your Kigali hotel and transported to Nyungwe Forest National Park. On the route, there will be a stop at the King’s Palace Museum followed by a visit to Huye Mountain Coffee. Lunch will be served in Huye; after which you will go to the lodge. Your lodge or hotel will provide dinner and provide overnight accommodations.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trek and Canopy Walk
On the second day of your 5 Days Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trek and Hiking Cyinzobe Trail Safari, you will have an early morning breakfast then report to the park headquarters in Nyungwe forest for briefing before going for chimpanzee tracking. However, it is advisable to organize packed lunch and plenty of water prior to this expedition since it can sometimes last over 6 hours. In the forest, you will not only see chimpanzees to but also variety of animals and birds like the Rwenzori Turaco, black and white casqued horn bill, colobus monkeys – sometimes as many as 400 individuals in a group.
After your gorilla trek, you will also enjoy a 2hour hike to and from the Canopy walkway bridge- a swing bridge 50 meters in length that is suspended from large trees. This hike takes about 2 hours to and from the canopy walkway bridge. You will be able to see the amazing rainforest with a bird’s eye view, spotting wildlife moving about below you. Before night fall, you will return to the hotel for dinner as above. Return late in the afternoon. Return for dinner and Overnight at your hotel/lodge.
Day 3: Hike Cyinzobe Trail
Your driving guide will pick you up from the lodge or hotel. The driving guide will then take you to the Uwinka Visitor Center, where you will meet your ranger guide and be briefed on safety procedures. Following the briefing, you will begin the hike up the western ridge via the Uwinka path.
This trail will take you through Nyungwe Forest National Park, where you will see amazing scenery vistas. Your ranger guide will show out bird and tree species, as well as, if you are lucky, silver or mountain monkeys. The day will conclude when you arrive at the first campground, where you will spend the night, and the guides will start a fire to keep you warm.
Day 4: Explore Cyinzobe Trail
On the second day of the Cyinzobe trail hike, you will have breakfast at the campsite before embarking on another hiking journey in Nyungwe Forest National Park. The trail leads to the Kamiranzovu wetland, home to unique flora and fauna, and you will have the opportunity to walk along the edge of the wetland and immerse yourself in the Nyungwe Forest National Park ecosystem. After exploring the wetland, you will continue hiking to the second campsite along the Kamiranzovu River. Dinner and overnight stay at your second campsite.
Day 5: Transfer Back to Kigali
The Cyinzobe trail’s third day is significantly shorter than the previous two. The walk mostly comprises traveling from the second campground to the Gisakura Visitor Center. The final portion of the path is 23 kilometers (14 miles) as you reach the Gisakura center, where the trip terminates. When you arrive in Gisakura, your driver guide will meet you and transport you back to Kigali.
