Size of Nyungwe Forest National Park is approximately 980 square kilometers n of biodiversity including grassland, rainforest, bamboo, and swamps. It was established in 2005, and the park protects Bigugu mountain which is within the park premises yet the nearest town to Nyungwe Forest national park is 55km in the west.

The size of Nyungwe forest National Park shows that it covers a significant part of Rwanda, the land of a thousand hills which is bordering Burundi in the south, Democratic Republic of Congo and Lake Kivu to the west.

The vast size of Nyungwe forest national park is preserved as a rainforest in the central region of Africa. The park is located in the watershed of river Congo to the west and basin of the River Nile in the East and the East side there is still a branch of the Nile source.

In this big size of Nyungwe forest national park, there are over 13 primate species, 300 bird species, 90 mammal species, 40 amphibian, and 40 reptile species.

The park is large that it can inhabit a big number of primate species such as chimpanzees, Red tailed monkey, Ruwenzori colobus monkey, L’Hoests monkey, Golden monkey, Silver Monkey, Vervet monkey, Olive Baboon, Dents mona monkey, Hamlyn monkey, Grey cheeked Mangabey.

With its large area, the park is rich in flora and Fauna. The animals that can be seen in the forest include Duikers, antelopes, warthogs and many more. There are over 300 tree species that are protected in this area of the park including wild Begonia, 200 orchid species, Gaint lobelias and many more.

It takes approximately 5 hours to reach Nyungwe Forest from Kigali city. The forest is mostly known for having the famous activities of Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk though it has other activities of nature walks and hiking. 

Chimpanzee trekking: Enjoy the chimpanzee trekking in the big size of Nyungwe Forest National Park as the chimps swing from tree to tree. Carry long sleeved clothes, hiking boots as you see the chimpanzees groom each other, play, feed and continue with their day to day activities 

Canopy walk: This canopy walk is the only canopy walk in East Africa in this big forest. The canopy walk is 50 meters above the ground and 90 meters long. Also, ensure to watch the monkeys as they roam in the forest and bird species flying over trees.
